It’s one of the best nakeds you can buy…

MCN’s Carl Stevens rode the new MT-09 at its world launch earlier in the year, and to whet your appetite, this is what he had to say…

“Yamaha have been back to the drawing board to make the MT-09 a sharper, more aggressive tool. But is it still the fun-loving all-rounder that made it so popular originally?

“The riding position has been heavily altered, which means that the 2024 MT-09 feels drastically different from the previous iteration and is more akin to the sportier nakeds in its stance. Not only are there a new seat and tank, the ’bars are lower and the ’pegs are further back by a substantial 30mm, and higher by 9mm. With all of this combined, it now gives the rider more feel, and offers a more engaging riding position.

“The engine is still an absolute peach, proving to be one of the most engaging around – it’s what makes the MT-09 so potent and addictive. With 64lb.ft of torque on tap it fires into life from the very bottom of the rev range, and is happy enough sitting a few gears too high, with the ability to pull with intent from just a few thousand rpm. In fact, it pulls so hard and so aggressively, that it could easily be mistaken for a machine that houses far more than its 117bhp figure. Yet the beauty of that CP3 motor is that it has such a wide operating window – it’s happy to be docile too, and is comfortable at 70mph without excessive vibes.

“The forks are now equipped with stiffer springs and the front end has slightly more aggressive geometry, which results in more precise feel on the way into, and through, a corner. Although the suspension is firmer at the front, the rear has been softened off slightly which means that it doesn’t get fazed by dodgy tarmac. When ridden hard it does have a tendency to squat under heavy acceleration, but it’s not too much of an issue. A new Brembo master cylinder has improved feel at the front brake lever.

“For a bike that’s just a snip over £10k, the MT-09 packs a serious level of equipment. It has pretty much all the bells and whistles, with a six-axis IMU powering an array of riding aids: lean angle sensitive traction control, ABS, wheelie control, a new motor slip regulator to aid on downshifts, and a suite of rider modes. There’s also now a plush up/down shifter and cruise control as standard, while everything is fed through a much improved 5in TFT.

“The chassis, suspension and riding position now allow for quick, precise riding as much as they allow for having a bit of fun. Yet thanks to the addition of cruise control and the slightly comfier seat it can be enjoyed for longer stints too, which is no mean feat. It’s a machine that does it all and is so good that it knocks loudly on the door of the super-naked sector, too.”
